Session: E-books, digital resources and digital citizenship

In this two part session, participants will have the opportunity to explore some of the latest digital resources available to students including the new ebooks in the library system and a database which offers over 1700 newspapers worldwide on the same day they were published. In part two, participants will examine the critical thinking skills students need to apply to their online experiences. Topics will include the ethical use of copyrighted material, cyber-communication, and digital security.

Outcomes

Participants will:

PART 1

  • preview the new ebooks available through the library system and examine the role ebooks could play in our classrooms
  • investigate online databases including Canadian Points of View, Literature Resource Centre,  Health and Wellness Resource
  • check out the improved search capability in the current events databases from Gale and ProQuest and the brand new Library PressDisplay

PART 2

  • examine the digital citizenship modules available from the Media Awareness Network that instruct students on essential digital literacy skills including researching and authenticating online information, managing privacy and reputation, dealing with online relationships, and using digital media in an ethical manner
