Screencasting 101

A screencast is a digital recording of computer screen output, also known as a video screen capture, often containing audio narration.A screenshot is a picture of a computer screen at a chosen time.

Screen casts can help demonstrate and teach the use of software features to your students. You can also use screen casts to create recorded examples of a teacher / student solving a problem or explaining a concept in a subject like math which can be archived on a class blog or wiki for students to watch.

We will look at 3 tools for screencasts:

1) Windows snipping tool

2) Notebook smart recorder

3) Jing on-line software

Outcomes:

Participants will:

  • create screenshots using the Windows snipping tools
  • Use the smart recorder to create a video of a teacher or student using the smart board to illustarte a procedure
  • create a jing account
  • use screenshot from jing to supplement text in a document
  • use jing to create a screencast of a techer or student solving a problem or demonstrating a concept which can be shared as a web link or saved as a video file
  • learn how to create a repository of these created educational web links in a wikii or blog which can be used for learning or tutorial purposes
