Building 21st Century Skills in the High School Classroom

Digital Storytelling

Session:  Digital Storytelling

Tired of using Powerpoint for presentations?  Looking for a simple multimedia technique that students can use to explain an idea or concept.  On the surface, digital storytelling is a technique which allows the author to tell a story using sound and images.  But digital storytelling can be used for much more.  It is a simple technique that students can use to publish their ideas whether locally on the school network or on the web.  In this workshop, we will use a piece of free software from Microsoft available on our networks, PhotoStory for Windows, to build a sample digital story.  We will discuss ways in which this technique could be used in a high school classroom.  Time permitting, we will also look at an alternative technique using Adobe Acrobat.  Participants are encouraged to bring electronic images and text that they would like to use to build a sample story on a topic of their choice.

Outcome:

  • Participants will be familar with the concept of digital storytelling and its application in the classroom.
  • Participants will be able to use Photostory for Windows to create digital stories in their classes.
