Welcome to Good Spirit School Division’s Understanding by Design professional modules.
This site is intended to be professional support as you begin your journey planning units of study using backward design as developed by Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe. The core resource used in preparing and planning for backward design is Wiggins and McTighe’s Understanding By Design (Wiggins, G. & McTighe, J. (2005). Understanding by Design. Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development. Alexandria).
Backward design is a “framework for designing curriculum units, performance assessments, and instruction that lead your students to deep understanding of the content you teach” (Wiggins & McTighe, 2007). The emphasis of UbD is on “backward design”, the practice of looking at the outcomes in order to design curriculum units, performance assessments, and classroom instruction.
